Local students win Black history art contest
Mayor Sandy Roberson joined US Cellular officials on Wednesday to announce the three winners of the eighth annual Black History Month Art Contest with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tar River Region at a celebration at the club’s Lucy Ann Boddie Brewer Unit at 405 Raleigh Blvd.
Ten finalists were chosen by representatives from the Boys & Girls Clubs based on creativity, quality, interpretation, clarity of theme and overall impression. Public voting for the finalists was made available online throughout the month of February. In addition, the finalists’ artwork was digitally displayed in US Cellular’s Rocky Mount locations.
“I am grateful for US Cellular’s generous, ongoing support of the Boys & Girls Club for its eighth annual Black History Month Art Contest,” Roberson said. “Creatively recognizing influential black leaders through art will not only celebrate the achievements of these leaders, but positively benefit these new artists. Scientific studies show the positive affect art has on our wellbeing.”
