Engineer: Sunset Avenue improvement project 92 percent complete

The project to upgrade and widen Sunset Avenue from the intersection with Eastern Avenue and Old Carriage Road to just west of Halifax Road is 92 percent complete, according to N.C. Department of Transportation District Engineer Kim Moore.
Barnhill Contracting Co., which has the contract for the project, should have the work completed by this fall, Moore said recently via email. The project is going to include an interchange with Interstate 95 and Sunset just south of the I-95 interchange with U.S. 64.
Mayor Sandy Roberson, in a recent phone interview, made clear that he does not believe Rocky Mount has done a great job of being able to capture some of the millions of vehicles whose drivers use I-95 every year.
Roberson said that he believes the future interchange is going to be a tremendous gift to Rocky Mount.
